Our country has become the largest producer of fiberglass in the world, and the demand for fiberglass is expected to soon exceed that of the United States, making it the largest market for fiberglass demand and applications globally. This is also the main reason why top global fiberglass companies are increasingly focusing on the Asian market. According to experts from the China Unsaturated Resin Network, its main application areas are primarily in the aviation sector, where the global aviation industry consumed 210,000 tons of composite materials in 2008. The renowned growth consulting firm Frost & Sullivan published a research report on the global aviation polymer-based composite materials industry in 2009, stating that with the development of the global aviation industry, the polymer-based composite materials market is expected to maintain double-digit growth before 2014.
It is predicted that from 2008 to 2014, the global aviation sector's use of composite materials will grow by 11% annually. Energy and electricity is both an established and emerging application area: firstly, wind energy, where global wind power capacity reached 159,213 MW in 2009, with an additional 38,312 MW added that year, resulting in an annual growth rate of 31.7%, the highest since 2001. By the end of 2009, global wind power generation was 3.4 trillion watt-hours/year, equivalent to the total electricity demand of Italy, the seventh-largest economy in the world, and about 2% of global electricity consumption. China continues to play a leading role in the international wind power industry, adding 13,800 MW of capacity in 2009, making it the largest market for new wind turbines, with installed capacity doubling for the fourth consecutive year. It is predicted that in 2010, China will add 15,000 MW of wind energy. Secondly, flue gas desulfurization, as thermal power generation accounts for more than half of global electricity generation, coal will remain the primary fuel for at least the next few decades.
All thermal power plants will eventually need to install scrubbers and desulfurization systems, and fiberglass is the most cost-effective material in this application area. Future investments in FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization) will primarily be in Asia, rather than in the United States and Europe, with China becoming the largest market for FGD systems, accounting for over 40% of the global total. In China, the application of fiberglass in desulfurization systems is still in the rising stage, with a few fiberglass companies able to provide fiberglass products that meet the requirements for desulfurization systems, and fiberglass products are still limited to spray pipes, and a few flue gas ducts and slurry pipelines for integrated desulfurization facilities. In the next 20 years, the desulfurization capacity of coal-fired power plants in China will more than double. If the fiberglass industry takes appropriate measures to strengthen product development, equipment manufacturing, and technological updates, as well as enhance market promotion and expansion, it will undoubtedly open up a broad market for fiberglass products in the FGD market. In 2010, the ECR fiberglass used in integrated desulfurization systems in China is expected to grow by over 50% compared to 2009. According to experts from the China Unsaturated Resin Network, thirdly, transmission and transformation facilities, due to the lightweight, high strength, good insulation, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance, ease of processing and forming, and easy maintenance characteristics of fiberglass, it has been widely used in the power industry. The application of fiberglass composite materials in the power industry, in addition to traditional transmission and transformation equipment and facilities, has made fiberglass poles and composite cable cores one of the industry's focal points. In recent years, as the land for transmission corridors has become increasingly tight, the advantages of composite materials for transmission poles have become more prominent.
Utilizing the excellent performance of composite materials not only overcomes the common defects of traditional transmission poles, such as heavy weight, easy corrosion, rust, or cracking, but also increases the insulation gap and creepage distance of the poles, improving the insulation level of the lines, further compressing the width of transmission line corridors, and reducing the construction and operational maintenance costs of transmission lines. With the progress and improvement of domestic fiberglass composite material forming technology and product performance, along with the reduction of manufacturing costs, the research and application conditions for fiberglass poles have been established. Many departments have begun application research work and have entered the line testing stage. According to experts from the China Unsaturated Resin Network, in terms of transportation, the focus is on rail vehicles. Between 2010 and 2015, the total length of urban rapid transit projects planned for construction in our country will reach 1,700 kilometers, with over 500 billion yuan of investment concentrated in this field. The application development of fiberglass in rail transit has shown great advantages and broad application prospects, ranging from fiberglass components to fully fiberglass locomotives and car bodies. In addition to applying existing technologies and processes for the research and production of rail vehicles, interior components, and equipment, it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on fiberglass manufacturing technologies with independent intellectual property rights and their mass-produced products to promote the development of high-speed rail transit in our country.
Currently, our country is in a prosperous period of rail transit construction and has become the largest urban rail transit market in the world. For fiberglass, this is a promising application area, and the industry should seize this opportunity to continuously develop new products and expand the application of fiberglass composite materials in the rail transit field.
Automobiles: In 2009, the production and sales of automobiles in our country reached 13 million units. With the introduction of the national plan to revitalize the automobile industry, the total application of fiberglass products in automobiles will be accelerated. At the same time, national energy-saving and emission-reduction policies, the development of new energy electric vehicles, and the trend of lightweight automotive materials also provide a broader market development space for the application of fiberglass products in automobiles. Additionally, in construction engineering—according to experts from the China Unsaturated Resin Network, the application of fiberglass products in the construction field, in addition to traditional products such as cooling towers, fans, water tanks, pipes, doors and windows, skylights, and decorative materials, the application of fiberglass in building reinforcement and bridges has become a new focus; petrochemicals: Petrochemicals are one of the important application areas for fiberglass, with continuous growth in products such as fiberglass high-pressure pipelines, storage tanks, and towers, and the application of fiberglass in underground oil tanks (double-walled tanks) and offshore oil engineering has become a focal point.
Water treatment engineering: Water treatment is generally divided into pure water treatment, circulating water treatment, and raw water wastewater treatment. Due to the high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and rust-free characteristics of fiberglass, it has been widely used in water treatment engineering. With the introduction of national environmental protection, energy-saving, and emission-reduction policies and regulations, the country will increase investment in this field, and the application of fiberglass/composite materials in water treatment facilities will see significant progress. Environmental protection and renewable energy engineering: Environmental protection and new rural construction are key projects that the country focuses on and supports, and they are also application areas that the fiberglass industry has paid attention to in recent years. Fiberglass purification (tank) pools and fiberglass biogas pools are projects that have attracted industry attention, with broad market development space.
For example, in new rural construction, fiberglass biogas pools are welcomed by farmers due to their excellent properties such as corrosion resistance, factory production, easy installation, fast gas production, long lifespan, and safe use, and they are emphasized and vigorously promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture. According to the Ministry of Agriculture's Rural New Energy Office, a plan to implement 5 million rural household biogas pools will be arranged for 2010. Finally, yachts: According to experts from the China Unsaturated Resin Network, there are approximately 18 million yachts worldwide. The total number of various yachts registered and used in the United States has reached 12 million. Currently, the annual production of yachts of all sizes and types worldwide is about 900,000. With the improvement of the global economic situation, foreign-funded yacht companies moving to the mainland, and the demand from China's high-income groups, as well as the planning and construction of yacht facilities in Hainan International Tourism Island and coastal developed areas, China's yacht industry will see significant development in the coming years.
